Lightening for a cover-up
If an old tattoo is to be covered with a new one, it helps to lighten the old design beforehand with a laser. This means the new design does not have to be larger and darker than you would like. Dr. Homssi carries out tattoo lightening himself at his practice in Prenzlauer Berg, using the Q-Switch laser Q-Plus EVO by Quanta System. In many cases, 2 to 6 sessions are sufficient, with each session estimated from approx. 95 €.

Why lighten before a cover-up?
A cover-up conceals the old design. To ensure nothing shows through, the new tattoo usually needs to be larger and darker. If the old tattoo is lighter beforehand, you and your tattoo artist have more freedom with the design, size and colours.
How many sessions does the lightening require?
Tattoos from a tattoo studio are usually applied more densely and generally require around 6 treatments. Tattoos applied less densely can often be lightened after just 2 to 6 sessions. There is a gap of at least 4 weeks between two sessions. It is best to discuss with your tattoo artist how light the area needs to become.
What does the lightening cost?
The prices for tattoo removal by size apply. Dr. Homssi determines the exact classification based on your photos.

When can the tattoo be applied after the lightening?
Only once the skin has fully healed after the last session. Discuss the exact timing with Dr. Homssi and your tattoo artist; it is often several weeks.

Frequently asked questions about lightening
Does the lightening hurt?
How uncomfortable the treatment is perceived varies from person to person. We apply a numbing cream beforehand and cool the skin during the treatment.
Can only part of the tattoo be lightened?
Yes, for example individual lines or lettering that would interfere with the new design.
Does the tattoo have to disappear completely?
No. For a cover-up, a noticeable lightening is usually sufficient.
