How does the laser work?

The ink pigments deposited in the skin by the tattoo are treated with ultra-short, high-energy pulses using the Q-Switch laser Q-Plus EVO by Quanta System.

The laser settings depend on the colours in the tattoo. The colour particles are „shattered“ in the process, with the skin turning white immediately for several minutes.

As the laser pulses penetrate the layers of the skin, the tattoo’s colour pigments absorb the light energy and are broken apart by the resulting heat. The tiny particles can then be transported away by the body via the lymphatic system. This technique leads to the tattoo gradually fading over several sessions.

How many sessions does my tattoo need?

Usually 5 to 8 sessions are required, at intervals of at least 4 weeks. During this time, the skin recovers and the body transports away the colour particles. How many sessions you will need depends on:

  • the size of the tattoo
  • the depth and density of the ink: tattoos from a studio are usually applied more densely than amateur tattoos
  • colours: dark colours usually respond better than light ones
  • the age of the tattoo: very old tattoos sometimes need more sessions
Timeline for tattoo removal: usually 5 to 8 sessions at intervals of at least 4 weeks, preceded by a consultation, tattoo approx. 3 months old
Schematic diagram: sessions and intervals for tattoo removal.

How much a tattoo fades varies from person to person. The aim is to remove the tattoo as far as possible. Whether it disappears completely cannot be reliably predicted in advance. With yellow, white and some light colours, complete removal is unlikely.

Which colours can be removed?

Black, grey and dark blue usually respond well. Red, green and turquoise often need more sessions. Yellow, white and skin tones are difficult to remove. Dr. Homssi will tell you which colours are in your tattoo and what that means for the number of sessions, based on your photos.

What affects tattoo removal: colour scale from dark to light including yellow and white, as well as size, depth of the ink, lymphatic system and age

Does it hurt, and does it leave scars?

How uncomfortable the treatment is varies from person to person. The numbing cream and cooling make it well tolerable for most people.

Possible side effects include redness, swelling and crusting in the first few days, occasionally blisters. Lighter or darker patches of skin (pigment changes) are possible and are usually temporary. Scarring is rare; the risk increases if the area is not properly cared for after treatment.

The treatment is not suitable for, among others, fresh tattoos (younger than about 3 months), tanned skin, during pregnancy, and with certain medications that make the skin sensitive to light. Dr. Homssi will discuss this with you before the first session.

After the treatment: care and healing

During and after the laser treatment, the skin is cooled intensively. After the laser treatment, we care for the treated area with a special wound cream and apply a sterile dressing, which should cover the treated area for at least 24 hours.

To minimise scab formation, care for the area in the following days as we explain to you after the treatment (details in the frequently asked questions below). During this time, you should not swim or sunbathe, as this can increase the risk of scarring.

In the first few days: no sauna, no solarium, no hot water, no full baths, no swimming. Apply SPF 50 to the area for at least 4 weeks.

Lightening a tattoo for a cover-up

A cover-up tattoo conceals the old motif with a new one. To stop the old tattoo showing through, the new motif usually needs to be larger and darker. If the laser lightens the old tattoo beforehand, you have more freedom when choosing the new motif.

How many sessions does the lightening require?

The number of sessions required to lighten a tattoo depends on:

  • the type of your tattoo: done professionally or by an amateur
  • the depth of your tattoo
  • the pigment density of your tattoo
  • the age of your tattoo

Tattoos from a tattoo studio are applied more densely and usually require around 6 treatments. Less densely applied tattoos can often be lightened after just 2 to 6 sessions.

The prices are the same as for tattoo removal. The classification is made by Dr. Homssi based on your photos.

Frequently asked questions about tattoo removal

Answers to the questions we are asked most often.

Tattoo removal usually takes only a few minutes per session, although this also depends on various factors such as the size of the tattoo. In most cases, however, a single session is not enough. Usually 5 to 8 sessions are needed, each at intervals of at least 4 weeks.

How uncomfortable the treatment is varies from person to person. We apply a numbing cream beforehand and cool the skin during the treatment with a medical cooling device.

During the tattooing process, colour pigments are introduced into the second layer of skin. As these colour pigments are a size that the body’s scavenger cells cannot break down, they remain in the tissue. During laser treatment, these colour particles are suddenly heated by an extremely short pulse and thereby broken down. The resulting pigment fragments are then a size that allows the scavenger cells to remove them and transport them away via the lymphatic system.
The tattoo gradually becomes lighter in the days and weeks after treatment. Since the colour is deposited in „layers“ in the tissue, this process has to be repeated several times until the tattoo has faded as much as possible.

To avoid scarring and reduce the risk of unwanted effects, a tattoo should be about 3 months old before it is treated with the laser.
With very old tattoos (over 10 years), it is possible that removal may require more sessions than with fresh tattoos.

Correct aftercare following a laser treatment is important for healing. After the treatment, the treated area should be cooled well (caution: no ice directly on the skin) and sprayed with an alcohol-free skin disinfectant 2 to 3 times a day in the following days. From the 2nd to 3rd day onwards, the area should be treated with a wound-healing care cream.
To avoid pigment changes, an SPF 50 sunscreen is recommended for a period of at least 4 weeks.

Immediately after the treatment, everything that introduces heat into the skin (sauna, solarium, hot water) as well as anything that causes additional irritation (full baths, mechanical strain) should be avoided.

You send photos, Dr. Homssi estimates the size and number of sessions, and you receive the price by email. The assessment is non-binding. You then decide.

The package includes 6 sessions for the price of 5. If your tattoo is likely to need 5 or more sessions, the package is the same price or cheaper than individual sessions.

Protect the area in the first few days until it has healed. Swimming, sauna and solarium only afterwards. Avoid the sun and apply SPF 50 for at least 4 weeks.
